G senjou no maou – Review [NSFW]

G-senjou_Game_logo

I decided to redo my review of G-senjou no Maou, because my previous review of G-senjou no Maou is.. Bad.. Like really bad at that time when I reviewed it my English was not up to standard at that point. In fact it is provably my worst review I ever done. Hahaha.. Feels bad man ;_;
So without any more useless information let’s get right into the review! Of course this time including some R18 content hence NSFW and I will be touching on the steam version a little. While at the same time talking about how the cut content affects the game as a whole.  [Note – This whole review contain spoilers, read at your own risk]

G-senjou no Maou [G線上の魔王] is a mystery-thriller visual novel is developed by AKABEiSoft2 and published by Sekai Project and was released on November 5, 2015 on the Steam platform. Originally released in 2008, the Steam Release of G-senjou no Maou – The Devil on G-String marks AKABEisoft2’s first officially localized release. But then there is no way to patch in the cut content which is a shame for the English market. Well legally

Brief overview of the story

You will play as Azai Kyousuke, the adoptive son of a yakuza boss you will see the world through his eyes as he puts up a facade of being a “rich person with taste” to keep his classmates away from him. He often enjoys listening to Bach and “working” part-time for his stepfather. But when a beautiful girl named Usami Haru appears in town along with an international criminal known as “Maou,” they bring with them their cat-and-mouse game of plotting and intrigue.

Thoughts On The Story and Cut content

I played this years ago and recently replayed it again and I am still not bored of the story. The story is interesting as it is filled with twists everywhere while it also make sure that the reader understands everything at the end. Basically as long you play the game to a full completion all of your questions related to the game will be answered naturally as you progress through the game. Though there are there is a point which I would like to highlight that I do not understand at all which is when Azai Kyousuke finds someone he loves his headaches are gone I don’t think that was mentioned in the game of why he gets these headaches at all. Though from my own speculations I think it is connected to his dark past with his family or an illness that affects his memories[?] Well that is not really important so lets move on.

Having mystery getting into the mix the plot gets shrouded in mystery instantly even Azai Kyousuke identity is suspicious at throughout the story. It has good foreshadowing on the plot, character and character backgrounds which makes it an even more enjoyable read It forces the reader to think with the game figuring out who is who. When I was playing through the routes I found myself very curious and it kept me guessing. How are the characters connected to each other? What causes a specific event to occur? Is Azai Kyousuke Maou? It kept me interested throughout, It was something that I wanted to get more details on, and this game definitely delivered.

If you are wondering about the “cropped” CG for the steam version. Here are my thoughts on it. I think it is nice that the steam version can be played in full and widescreen but then it comes with a cost of some extra detail being cut out take this for example where the plate, glass and half of the bottle has been cut out entirely. Which sucks and as a person who played the JP version of this game it just does not feel right with me when I am playing through this. Just look at the top screenshots as an example.

Onto the routes. I did Tsubaki Miwa’s Route route first, and I was glad that I made the right choice because of how the routes are planned in a way that you have to complete all of the routes in order to witness the events unfold beautifully as it answers your questions slowly, route by route. The story branches off into the other three heroine’s routes at different points during the common route. So here is the recommended playing order.

  1. Tsubaki Miwa            [Good and Bad end]
  2. Kanon Azai                [Good and Bad end]
  3. Mizuha Shiratori     [Good and Bad end]
  4. Haru Usami               [There is no bad end on Haru route]

For my favorite route among all of them.. Hmmm… This is a tough question.. But if I were to choose I would say Haru Usami route.. The reason being is that everything is more detailed and it is the only route that has a proper closure. Her route among all of them was also the most intense, when things kick off in her route everything just happens at once, like a roller coaster going downwards and you will be feeling all the  excitement. Only in her route you will know the true identity of maou while at the same time get to see the events that lead up to Azai Kyousuke personality.

Honestly at first when playing through the other 3 heroine routes I was very convinced by the game that Azai Kyousuke is maou but in reality he is not but actually the person that is maou is his brother that “died” in a subway bombing. Though of course that was not the case because he faked his death and just left his passport at the aftermath and the police concluded that he is dead since his body is believed to be blown into pieces and cannot be found. [Talk about lazy investigations]

Cut Content on the Steam version

I have read many people debating whether or not the R18 scenes are important in this game and here are my opinions on it. Of course I will not be talking about the R18 scenes that are in the good end because they are just well.. Normal.

So my opinion on the H-scenes is that the H-Scenes do actually add to the story, they aren’t just for the sake of having an R18 scene. They have purposes and are there mainly to give a lot of insight into the characters. Their mental state or their standing etc.

Tsubaki’s route depicts Kyousuke trying to corrupt an innocent girl for his pleasure, and just how far he’ll go making her more of a human since she is brought up in a family where everything is all rainbows and smiles flying around. Basically showing Tsubaki the true nature of reality and making her more of a person who wants to just enjoy and care for her self only. Because when he met her she is just that pure innocent girl that puts others happiness above hers. It is kind of depressing in a way from my perspective.

Kanon’s bad ending sex scene actually smacks you in the face when giving her sex instead of what she really needs, practice and motivation. Basically morals are being put into place here. Because in her bad end route it’s very obvious that her mental state is very messed up and giving her what she wants makes it even worse it is like just helping her to run away from the problems and never ever solving it.

Mizuha’s bad end route shows herself letting Kyousuke rape her because she loves him but he does not love her at all and it is a 1 sided affair, basically a sex friend in some ways.[?] It shows how messed up both she and Kyousuke are to the point that Mizuha herself gave up after some time. In the entire timeskip she also come to a realization of how little she grew up because she relies on Kyousuke  to forget her troubles about losing her friend in her route. Okay this route is somewhat messed up but still it is enjoyable because it is just interesting to see someone change so much just because of 1 bad decision which leads a person into a bottomless pit with no escape.

Haru’s R18 scene. Her groping scene in the city shows how hellish the situation actually is, since they have to fake a rape just to get people to leave them alone in all the chaos after maou enact his plans.

When she comes to strip in front of you, that’s a huge insight to her character because you never see her act like that before then, it’s all her joking around. And the emotional turmoil Kyousuke is in during that scene is also really eye opening, in that scene alone it gives so much insight into the characters mental state. Basically you can tell that both parties involved felt really guilty and do not know what to do exactly. I am sure we as the reader “IRL” have come across this situation many times where you want to do something but you just can’t do it because doing it will destroy more things that you hold dear but if you do no do it your emotions just gets stored more and more with no outlet for you to release your anger on. Yeah I hate that too who doesn’t?

They may not all be entirely important to the story, but they all add a lot to your understanding of the characters. Without them there is a lot of characterization missed. At the end of the day this is just my opinion on the removed content for the official English release for G senjou no maou. If you could I would highly suggest you to get the full Japanese version from places like Amazon.co.jp etc.

Music in the menu give that creepy feeling when you play in the dark I loved the overall creepy atmosphere it manages to set and I loved the way they can turn the creepy and dark atmosphere into a cheery and cute atmosphere all with the use of music that goes along with the gloomy and bright colors being put to use. Music that is being used in the opening movie is just “epic”no matter how many times you listen to it. Do yourself a favour and skip to 1:00 or just click on it if you are too lazy. Oh and by all means listen ti “close your eyes” too its just so good. It’s from G senjou no maou too. Note those 2 videos are different versions of the song.

To sum up 9/10

I would definitely recommend this visual novel to anyone because this visual novel overall would appeal to most people and would recommend anyone that likes mystery/thriller genre with investigations going on all around in the visual novel. Though like I mentioned at the top I would highly suggest you to get the full Japanese version from places like Amazon.co.jp etc. To get the full experience.

My final words – Kyousuke is sure one savage piece of shit. Just seeing the bad ends it tells me so much about his character as a whole. Though it may apply to all of us too because when we are being pushed into the corner or having met someone new that impacts our lives we may just change into an entirely different person or just become a person that is in an even worse state.
