Highway Blossoms – Review

HB-PromoArt

Developed by AlienWorks and published by Sekai Project onto steam. Highway Blossoms is a short yuri story set in American Southwest. It takes place after an old gold rush miner’s journal is discovered, supposedly detailing and containing clues about where he hid parts of his stash, a nationwide craze begins as people try to solve its clues and strike it rich.

The Story 6.7/10

I will say this first I am totally clueless about America and their culture in general so I would like to say this first that there are some things in Highway Blossoms which I completely did not understand at all. Like for example Ska music I have no idea what that is throughout my play trough of Highway Blossoms until I googled it. I also noticed that it talked about how dangerous rest stops are and yet again I am totally clueless on this.

The story itself is relatively slow pacing in fact it felt a little to slow to the point where certain parts of the story felt a little “dry”. I get that it is trying to build up to the climax but it takes too long to build up hence it gets a little boring at the 20% to 35% portion of the story but after than the story starts to pick up its pacing and it is alright from there on.

The story starts of with Amber, who couldn’t care less about the treasure let alone know about the treasure existence. Wandering the Southwest in an inherited motorhome, she mourns the loss of her grandfather, totally unaware of the hunt taking place around her. Not until she meets Marina, a young hitchhiker wandering through the deserts of New Mexico. Things start to pick up from there after she lets Marina get a ride from her and gets to know about the treasure.

Audio and Visual Elements 7/10

Visual Elements – Wow 🙂 For the visual aspects I think it is generally well done and the art style is very pleasing to the eye and it gives off a nice ambiance around the visual novel itself with the use of vivid colors. As for the backgrounds they blended in with the whole visual novel naturally with all that American desert.

I loved the way the sprites moved and backgrounds in dialogues corresponding to what is going in the visual novel. It adds more realism take for example when Amber is driving in the motorhome the background moves a little and it gives off the vibe that they are really driving but on your PC screen. 😉

Audio Elements – I relatively enjoy the music in Highway Blossoms though I would like to state that at certain parts of the story no music was used and It got a little awkward. Just pure silence and just text, overall the music did fit in to the situation nicely. If you are interested they have a DLC containing all the soundtracks used in Highway Blossoms of course cassette tape not included. 😉

Key Features:

  • Awesome achievements [I will let that lenny face speak for itself]
  • Actual landmarks in the western United States
  • Alternate silly content for second read throughs that AlienWorks let the programmer write. [It is pretty funny]
  • 6 or so hours of reading relatively short good to pick it up and read it if you are short on time
  • YURI
  • Content Restoration Patch

HB5

To sum up 6.8/10

Would I recommend Highway Blossoms? As a huge fan of Yuri genre it would go against my nature to not recommend Highway Blossoms. Its short and cute though the pacing of the story is not to my liking I think Highway Blossoms is well worth your time if you are into yuri and like a American theme.

Lastly I would like to thank Sekai Project for providing me a review copy for Highway Blossoms.
