Kara no Shoujo – Review [NSFW]

-2016-mar-1-012Please do note the top part of this review is a spoiler free. But at the bottom there is a spoiler image.

Kara no Shoujo [殻ノ少女] developed by Innocent Grey and published by MangaGamer in English. Kara no Shoujo is definitely one of the most interesting visual novel I have read in a while. The touch of mystery, horror, point and click and detective work all in the mix of this visual novel not to mention the story is very rich and I was forced to use a guide to complete it due to the complex routing in the game. Overall it is definitely an enjoyable read. I highly suggest you to use a guide to complete Kara No Shoujo as like I said it is very complex in a sense that is uses “blind choices” so if you are not going to use a guide prepare to spend a longer period of time to complete Kara No Shoujo. Relevant links can be found below of the review later on.

Side Note – I spent 13 hours straight trying to figure out the blind choices until I finally gave up and used a guide.

The Story 9.8/10

Taking place in year 1956, a series of bizarre murders is plaguing the city of Tokyo. One where young woman are disappearing, only to turn up dead and maimed with their wombs torn out. Tokisaka Reiji, an ex-cop turned private eye, joins the investigation at the behest of his friend Uozumi Kyozo, a detective in the MPD. At the same time, he takes on a missing person’s case at a private all-girls high school Ouba Girls Academy, a school on the outskirts of Hoya City, as well as a mysterious request from a girl named Toko to find her true self. As Reiji frantically struggles to crack the case, he learns that the murders bear an uncanny resemblance to a case in which his own fiance was murdered six years ago. But try as he might, the body count just keeps rising, what should have been a simple search for some students is getting out of control. For some reason, the number of missing person and unidentified bodies don’t match up. As the endless cycle of tragedy continues, what dark mysteries lie behind all these incidents or cases?

Perhaps one girl’s shell smile might wait beneath the shell of tragedy…

This is so damn beautiful.

Thoughts On The Story

To put it simply certain H-scene are too random the timing of the H-scene in Kara no Shoujo. I was looking into why the H-scene seems random but found out actually it is that those “blind choices” you make in game will affect which heroine/route you will get onto. But even if that is the case lets say I choose subject A in this manner I know, I will go into her route but once on her route the build up starts which is fine but then the build up did not last for long for certain characters and for that few certain characters, it will go into their H-scene at a timing which it felt really out of place.

Next its blind choices, I do not mind blind choices at all honestly in fact I do love them I am the type of person who plays games that are usually challenging but not to challenging to the point that is rage inducing. But what Kara No Shoujo did was pissed me off with its blind choices. The blind choices in this game has this huge “gap” in between them and they are way too large. Meaning if I were to make a wrong choice at the start and by the time I realize my mistake, it usually is too late and I will have to go back the story by a huge amount just so I can correct it. An example of this would be one of my play through in that particular play through I had to delete my whole save file and restart because when I went back with a load and change the choices but then even when I tried to correct my choices with every different variations it just lead me to the very same bad ending which just sucks and what this means is that somewhere at the front I have already made a choice which had already fucked up the whole game which sucks. Other than that I think this game honestly would have been better without these blind choices. To be honest if you are looking to read or complete I would highly suggest you to just use a guide from the very start of the game as it would save you loads of time and provably not make you tear your hair out trying to figure out the right choices.

But at the end of the day I really enjoyed the whole game as a whole, the visuals are just stunning in my opinion. [ Note it is quite an old game ] Plus it goes so well with the music. What more could you ask for from a visual novel that has visuals, music and a well written story? I forgot to mention that this game will have 3 parts too. So yes 3 games for you to enjoy fully. [ Note as off 2016 part 3 has not been released yet ]

Audio and Visual Elements 10/10

Visual Elements – Many things to note here is that the backgrounds, CGs and character sprites used in Kara no Shoujo are very consistent with each other in turn made the whole visual novel as whole looks smoother. This is really a huge thing for me overall I absolutely adore the art style used in Kara no Shoujo. Anyone who have played any Innocent Grey games will know when a game is created by them as they have a very distinctive artstyle to their name. Next H-scenes of course they look great and consistent with the sprites and CGs.

Audio Elements – Music is a very important factor to consider in a visual novel because music has a great ability to set the mood and make things flow from then on. Kara no Shoujo definitely has this executed perfectly. In fact I adore every single soundtrack that has been used in Kara No Shoujo as each of them flawlessly managed to set the mood perfectly. Obviously there is that 1 or 2 particular soundtrack that will always stands out for me, Kara No Shoujo its a different story, there is 6 soundtrack out of 26 soundtracks that stands out being extremely appealing to me and their name being, “Kara No Shoujo, Pursuit, Holiday, Paranoia, Reborn and Azure Bird.” This is definitely a rare case for me to point out so many soundtracks at once that caught my attention. Not to mention that the voice actors for Kara No Shoujo really did a great job bringing the characters to life and it each of their voices fits perfectly for the characters it just made the whole game much more enjoyable and gave “life” to it making it shine more beautifully.

To Sum Up 9.8/10

To sum up I would definitely recommend this great title from Innocent Grey. Kara no Shoujo isn’t a visual novel to be missed and whether you’re a fan of visual novels, anime, or even just well-written stories, this is something that will be a deep and engaging experience. If you love detective work with dark mysteries waiting to be uncovered and solved then go for it because if you do love all those elements missing this will definitely cause you to regret on later.
